Being The Leader And The Follower In Dance

In partner dances like waltz, tango and rumba

, the importance of the art of leading and following cannot be overemphasized. The partners must be able to synchronize their moves for many reasons. For one thing, the smooth flow of dance movements will be interrupted so much so that that the entire choreography appears disjointed, disagreeable and often met with disapproval from the judges as well as disappointment from the audience.

Let's discuss the art of leading first. This is the sole responsibility of the male in the dance and is the art of directing one's partner through the dance from one step to the next. Such is the importance of leading in a dance that competitions have been lost and won based on how well the male leads the female through the dance steps, regardless if the choreography is well-rehearsed or completely on-the-spot. The main complaints of the females in ineffective leading revolve on the male being too indecisive in making up his mind, too late in giving the directions and too rough in making the next move.

For the part of the female in the dance partnership, it is also important to effectively follow the lead of the male. Admittedly, women often learn the dance steps easier, faster but it is an insufficient reason to become the leader of the partnership. Just as the male's role is to lead, it is the female's responsibility to follow. Keep in mind that it is the art of dance being discussed instead of society as a whole.

To ensure that both males and females understand their respective roles in dance with respect to leading and following, most dance instructors will instruct their students to exchange partners. This is to avoid situations where the men and women acquire permanent dance habits that may or may not be correct. With each changing of partners, the mistakes on either leading or following can be remedied by the new partner since a new perspective has come into the dance equation.

Of course, in competitions and performances, it is necessary to establish a good, if not outstanding, dance partnership between the two sexes. Through months of training, dancing and moving together, leading and following can be like second nature.
