Being a Smart Worker!

Being a Smart Worker!

Being a Smart Worker!

It makes me wonder when people judge or rate team members based on the hours they spend at office. A person spending 12 hours a day and 6 days a week is rated better than the person who spends 8 hours a day and 5 days a week. Should this be the criteria to judge who is better than the other. How often do we forget that there is something seriously wrong when the team spends non-business hours/ days at office consistently? I can think of only 2 reasons (unless the situation demanded their presence during non-business hours).

1. Person is not productive. He needed 12 hours to complete a work which should have been completed in 8 hours time.

2 . Inadequate Planning. Project Manager estimated a task to be completed in 8 hours time but it actually required 12 hours (even when the resource is highly productive). This cannot be avoided always. But Managers need to get better at estimation as they experience such variations.

There will be a third case when the team had to compress the schedule because of external factors. Triple constraints comes into picture here and quality/ cost might get hit if duration is compressed.

Amidst all this, do we really spend time to appreciate the Smart' Worker who is highly efficient and completes a work in 6 hours which would have required 8 hours usually.Theydo not usually get their due and are usually branded non-commited for not slogging outside business hours.

It has become a thumb rule now adays that people are expected to spend long hours at office. There are exceptions too.. But I find that there are quite a lot of managers out there who judge people capability based on the hours they spend at office. We need to understand that more the hours people spend at office, more the resources he is using (increasing the cost for the company). We will lose the talented resources if we do not appreciate the fact that there is a personal life outside professional life and that is more important.. At the end of it, everyone of us work hard (or should I say, smart) to have a better a personal life..

Planning well ahead and Time Management will help you get smart at doing work.
