What is an Air Flow Meter?

The air flow meter helps keep your engine running smoothly. It's used to measure the quantity of air going into the engine. It uses a hot wire to measure, then sends a signal to the PCM.

Keeping your MAF sensor is beneficial to your ride, since an incorrect air-fuel ratio can result in decreased fuel economy and a loss of power -- and no one wants that. If you find your AFM is faulty, replace it with an aftermarket MAF sensor to gain faster acceleration, increase torque and improve fuel economy.

Signs of a Faulty AFM:

Rough idling, problems starting, extended crank time when engine is cold, poor fuel economy or stalling may be indicators of a faulty AFM.

How to Check:

Step 1. Locate the sensor. Hint: it looks like a "T."

Step 2. Check for dust or debris on the lower have of the "T" -- where the sensor wires are.

Step 3. Set a voltmeter to the ohms setting.

Step 4. Measure the resistance between the terminals. The reading should be around a 0. If it is, that's great. If it is not, you have a broken meter.

Replacing your Air Flow Meter

You decided to upgrade your stock air flow meter for a performance MAF sensor. Follow this removal and installation tips to replace your faulty AFM.

First, disconnect the negative battery cable and disengage the wiring harness from the IAT and mass air flow sensors. Then, remove the engine air cleaner tube. Next, take out the MAF sensor.

To continue with installation, repeat these steps in reverse. Attach the MAF. Install the air cleaner outlet tube and reattach the wiring harnesses to the IAT and MAF sensors. Connect the negative battery cable and viola -- you've got a brand new sensor!
