Bekal Fort Fortified With Grandeur

The winds are tropical, the skies are sunny, the trees are abloom and Kerala is famous for its beaches. Along the Western coast of the South Indian state stands the Bekal Fort sprawled over 40 acres of sandy land, with the sea waves flowing in to embrace the fortress. There is no evidence of a palace having existed within the premises; therefore it is believed that the fort was custom built for defensive purposes.

Its design and irrigation system have amazed visitors as there are water tanks along with flights of steps and stairways which disappear into the earth and lead into a tunnel that opens out to the south. The observation tower offers unparalleled views of the surroundings and is strategically positioned to monitor even the slightest movements in the cities around. There is an ancient ammunition storeroom within the fort which would have come in handy to ward off enemies coming in from the sea as well as inland.

Its scenic beauty has captured the hearts of movie producers and directors, being featured in several Malayalam and Hindi movies. The rhythmic dances of the coconut trees against a greenish blue backdrop, with a few seagulls gaily breezing past is more than just breathtaking.

The sandy dunes and comfort of a Kerala beach resort to complement the majestic citadel would be what every discerning traveler yearns for.
