Belly Fat Linked to Diabetes
With a majority of the population of the United States considered overweight, we have seen an increase in the number of individuals diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Doctors have linked belly fat to an increased risk for developing Type 2 diabetes.
It has been shown that reducing belly fat can reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes. Proper diet, portion control, and exercise can all be used to get your belly fat under control, but sometimes diet and exercise are not enough. Your plastic surgeon can help you achieve your goals with liposuction, if diet and exercise are falling short.
Liposuction is a procedure in which your plastic surgeon removes fat cells through small incisions using a metal tube called a cannula. Your plastic surgeons can sculpt your body by carefully removing some of the fat in specific areas, shrinking them and softening your curves.
While liposuctions can be used to reduce fat in areas, it is best used on patients who have already lost weight through diet and exercise. Obese patients are not suitable candidates for liposuctions due to the nature of the procedure.
After you have achieve a good amount of weight loss and belly fat reduction through diet, your plastic surgeon can help you reach your final goal. There are several types of liposuctions available. Two of the most popular types of liposuction are tumescent and ultrasound assisted.
Tumescent Liposuction
The term "tumescent" means swollen. During tumescent liposuction, your plastic surgeon will inject a diluted solution of epinephrine and lidocaine to the site to constrict blood vessels and reduce potential bleeding at the site of the liposuctions. Lidocaine is absorbed by the fatty tissue, causing it to swell. This allows for a larger area to be performed with a small, modern cannula. This is one of the safest forms of liposuction available on the market today due to the smaller instruments used and local anesthesia, both making recovery much faster than traditional liposuction.
Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL)
UAL liposuction uses a cannula to emulsify fat with sound waves. It is usually followed by suction assisted liposuction to remove the residual fat. This method of liposuction does not offer many advantages over suction assisted liposuction and is associated with more potential complications, so it is not performed by many plastic surgeons.
