Chris Davis was the Rangers' third baseman for a split-squad home game against the Indians on Thursday. Esteban German was the third baseman on the team headed for Mesa, Ariz., to play the Cubs. where to buy cheap MLB Jerseys?ujersy is a good choice.
Michael Young, who was the Rangers' third baseman last year, was in Mesa, but playing second base in his new role as a designated hitter/utility infielder.
Adrian Beltre? He spent the morning in a swimming pool doing aquatic rehabilitation on his strained right calf. His immediate future calls for more swimming than playing baseball.
The original diagnosis was that Beltre would be sidelined for 10 to 14 games, meaning he would make his debut in a game sometime next week. That does not appear to be the case.
"When we say 10 to 14 days, that was a ballpark figure," assistant general manager Thad Levine said. "We're still getting to know the player, his healing process and the nature of the injury. The goal is to get the player healthy, not push him. We are less focused on an exact date and more on Opening Day. He is making progress, the symptoms are subsiding and he is doing more activities."
Beltre is not limited to the swimming pool -- he is still able to swing the bat and take batting practice. He is throwing as well. He is just not able to take ground balls at third base or do any running. recommend directory: Halladay #34 Philadelphia Phillies kids white MLB Jersey.
"I'm doing better," Beltre said. "I have been doing a lot of stuff in the water. In a couple of days, we'll see how it is. If there is no more pain, I can do more stuff."
Beltre, who signed a six-year, $96 million contract with the Rangers in the offseason, originally injured the calf muscle working out on a treadmill at his home in Los Angeles just before coming to Spring Training. He began camp doing just about everything, but aggravated the injury in early workouts. An MRI showed a Grade 1 strain. That is considered the mildest of three possible grades.
If this were the regular season, Beltre said he could play. Since this is Spring Training, he hasn't played and isn't likely to do so for awhile.
"I don't want to make it worse," Beltre said. "The goal is to be ready for Opening Day. I don't want to rush it now, have a setback and be questionable for April 1. I want to take it smoothly."
Texas opens the season on April 1 against the Red Sox at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. That is still more than four weeks away, so the Rangers aren't concerned that Beltre will be marked absent that day.
Beltre said the most important thing right now is being able to take batting practice and maintain his throwing program. He said he could get ready defensively within a week of taking ground balls.
"We have been given no reason to think Opening Day is in jeopardy," Levine said. "We're still operating under that premise. Based on where we are and the fact that the player is not competing for a position, we want to be more cautious." recommend directory: Cliff Lee #33 Philadelphia Phillies white kids MLB Jersey.
