Benefits of Oil Rig Work
Oil industry jobs aren't the standard answers you give when asked what you wanted to be when you were a kid. Plus, there's this idea that oil rig work is tough, dangerous, and dirty. These things are generally true. But then, these don't tell the whole story on oil and gas careers. There are several advantages to oil and gas jobs. Here are some of them:
Good pay and job variety
For a dirty job, oil and gas jobs pay well. But then jobs in the oil industry doesn't just include manual labor. Expert and skilled workers are also needed: engineers, computer technicians, mechanics, and geologist jobs are also available in oil rigs. Working in an oil rig doesn't necessarily mean all you would get are jobs in drilling. People with the necessary skills and expertise are also needed in the oil industry.
Newbies are welcome
Even if you have no experience working in oil rigs, you can still find work there. Though you may start from the bottom, usually as a manual laborer, you can still work your way up. The important thing is that even if you're inexperienced, you still have a chance to work in the oil industry. Especially if you have the skills and expertise needed in the industry, previous experience would not matter much so long as you have the qualifications for the job.
Travel opportunites
Since oil rigs and exploration sites are located offshore or overseas, oil and gas careers offer opportunities to travel. You may get assigned to the US , Canada , or the Middle East, or some other potentially oil-rich location depending on your job. Aside from travel, you'll also be exposed to different cultures as most oil rig crews are composed of people from different nationalities.
Career advancement
As mentioned earlier, you can start as a roughneck or a manual laborer, but you can improve yourself and aim for something higher. Some oil companies offer employees training and schooling opportunities, so advancing your career by adding more skills to your resume is not impossible. In some cases, these training programs are sponsored or paid for by the company. If you work hard enough, growing in the industry is assured.
These are just some of the benefits. Oil industry jobs may not be considered prestigious or luxurious, but they are still interesting and rewarding. Compensation is good and the area for growth is big, so you're not in a bad place when you decide to build your career in the oil industry.
