Benefits of antenatal care

Antenatal care is aimed at keeping a mother to be fully informed of the progress of her pregnancy

, providing helpful information, guidance and support throughout. When you first go for an antenatal check up, you will be given the following information:

Written information outlining the benefits and aspects of antenatal care Literature, including a book called 'The Pregnancy Book' which can be obtained from many health departments Information about where antenatal care is offered and who it is offered by

The general principles of antenatal care are offered from a midwife or GP, providing that your pregnancy has not had any complications. However, specialist care is available when any complications may occur. You will normally be seen by a small group of medical professionals and you are responsible for carrying your own notes and records.

During your antenatal care, you will be advised to take 400ug of folic acid for up to 12 weeks. Folic acid helps to reduce any defects.

Whilst attending antenatal care, you will be required to have an ultrasound scan and a Down syndrome test. You will be advised to write a birthing plan, outlining any pain relief you will require and how you want to give birth to your baby. If you are overdue, then decisions will be made for the induction of labour after you are 41 weeks.

During your antenatal care you will be given advice on benefits you maybe entitled to and your maternity rights. This is to help reassure you financially and give you advice about continuing work during pregnancy.
