Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Prostate Formulas Used to Treat it
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common complaint that affects more than 50% of men over the age of 50. From the age of around 30 onwards, the amount of testosterone a man produces begins to decline steadily, and the rate at which free testosterone is broken down into its metabolite di-hydro-testosterone (DHT) increases.
DHT concentrations affect several systems in the male body, and high levels of DHT are often linked to hair loss as well as enlarged prostate. DHT binds to the hair follicles, depriving them of oxygen and nutrients, slowly thinning the hair and causing the root to die.
High DHT concentrations also cause the prostate gland to enlarge. DHT binds to prostate cells and causes them to divide more quickly, steadily enlarging the gland. This causes the gland to slowly pinch and constrict the urethra, causing difficulty urinating. As men get older, this enlargement becomes more and more pronounced, and many men find it very difficult to maintain a steady flow of urine and to empty their bladders fully. Enlarged prostate can also lead to problems with normal sexual function such as difficulty ejaculating.
Whilst BPH affects more than half of men over the age of 50, the incidence increases as men get older, and it is thought that more than 75% of men over the age of 80 will suffer problems due to BPH.
BPH is of course a non-cancerous swelling of the prostate gland and is merely uncomfortable and inconvenient rather than life-threatening, but those who suffer from BPH are at a slightly higher risk of developing prostate cancer, the most common and deadly male cancer.
It is strongly advised that all men over 40 be regularly screened for prostate cancer, as the disease responds very well to treatment in the early stages, but can be very difficult to eradicate if not detected early.
For men suffering from BPH, there are several prescription medications available to reduce the swelling, and also several effective herbal formulations that work in a similar way. The most common herbal remedy is a high-dose of Saw Palmetto extract. Saw Palmetto contains a compound that inhibits the action of DHT, preventing it from binding to prostate cells and ensuring that it is eliminated from the body more quickly. Other common treatments include pumpkin seed extract and nettle root extract.
Because BPH is caused by a reduction in free testosterone, increasing one's testosterone levels may help to ward problems off and prevent the prostate from beginning to enlarge too early in life. An herbal supplement such as Tribulus 500, which contains a concentrated extract of the herb Tribulus terrestris, can help to raise testosterone production to upper-normal levels.
The most important thing for any man to remember is that as soon as any problem with the prostate gland occurs, he must consult his doctor to be sure the problem is benign.
