Benzoin - All You Need To Know

Benzoin, or benzoin resin as it is aptly called

, is the sap of several species of Styrax trees found in most parts of South-East Asia. The basic content of this liquid is the benzoic acid and is normally used in perfumes, incense and for medicinal purposes, including aromatherapy. Its fixative characteristics and vanilla like scent adds to its popularity and usefulness.

Benzoin resin comes in two types depending on the species of trees from which they are extracted. Benzoin Siam comes from trees found in the Asian mainland countries of Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, while Benzoin Sumatra comes from trees found exclusively in the South-Asian Island of Sumatra. Both types are used in perfumery since they help slow down the dispersion of critical oils from perfumes.

The substance has been in use since centuries in aromatherapy and as a cure for many illnesses. It is no wonder that the substance has transcended all political and geological boundaries and is highly sought after all over the world, including the Americas, Europe, Africa and Mainland Asia.

The substance has multifarious facets. It is used as a counter balance against bacterial and fungal infections and a bulwark against gas formation and indigestion. The material protects wounds from getting infected, relieves lung congestion, aids in blood circulation and is also a good anti-oxidant. However, the most known use of the resin is as a deodorant since it exudes a long-lasting aroma.

Benzoin resin is a very thick liquid in its original form and it is possible to pour it out only after diluting it with alcohol or vodka. Heated vegetable oil is also commonly used to thin out the liquid. The benzoin available in most drug stores comes in a diluted form so that customers can use it without any fuss.

Talking about the medicinal properties of benzoin resin, the first quality that comes into mind is the fact that it is a good preventive measure against skin redness, irritations and itching. In addition, it is used in skin care to protect chapped skin by increasing its elasticity and thus preventing further damage. Those suffering from sinusitis and lung diseases can expect relief if the oil is rubbed on to the body. Benzoin combined with alcohol is also used to make cough syrups and such medications.

It is a good idea to do some research before using any type of medication available in the market.
