Bermuda Governement Gives Away Reflective Vests

Reflective tape used in vests and high visibility clothing isn't just used the professional industry

. It has a variety of uses around the world in the consumer sector. Regardless of the use, it always boils down to increasing safety and visibility. These products, such as high visibility clothing and reflective vests are so effective with safety workers, road crews, utility workers, the military and professionals that municipal and government officials are seeing the need to make the public more aware of these products in an effort to decrease injury and fatalities along primary access ways where pedestrian traffic mingles with motor vehicles.

Bermuda is one such example, where government officials were giving away hundreds of reflective vests and other reflective accessories that features reflective tape and sew on reflective tape. The road safety council attended the Harbour Nights festival to engage with local citizens and promote awareness about safety.

The giveaway was due to the fact that there has been an increase in vehicle vs. pedestrian collisions with resulting injuries between 2011 and 2012 on the roads of Bermuda, according to a report and initiative from the Minister of Transport Walter Roban in the House of Assembly.

In cases like these you often think that injuries stemming from pedestrian vs. automotobile are the fault of the driver, but as more people take to the streets to save money through walking or biking, there are countless scenarious where it's not the fault of the driver. It's also the fault of pedestrians who don't pay attention or cross the roads at inappropriate times/places

With high visibility clothing, even if there is inattention on the part of the pedestrian, reflective tape can help to minimize accidents and collisions by grabbing the attention of motorists so they have time to react appropriately.

According to Walter Roban " Safety and fairness on the roads means not only being concerned for the safety of drivers and riders but also the numerous walkers and runners who make use of the roads daily,

"We gave away more than 300 reflective vests and nearly 12 hundred reflective key chains. We also provided pamphlets that we hope will spread the message and inspire people to be much more careful about how they interact with roads and motorists."

Bermuda is not the only location with an increase of pedestrian vs. vehicle incidents. Other nations have seen increases as well, and are moving to do something about the problem. One of the reasons why it's easier to maintain awareness at this point is because textile companies can achieve more with retro-reflective clothing than they could before. It can be comfortable, and even stylish.

Textile manufacturers like Loxy are producing more casual clothing and sport-related garments that feature sew on reflective tape. With these new garment types, consumers can easily access the products to help keep them safe while crossing roads and cycling.
