Beryl Platform: 4 Unlikely Reasons To Work On An Offshore Oil Rig
So long as you can actually understand what they're saying
, you'll find the Scots a hearty bunch. Their people have gone through a lot, but their country has found a saving grace in the North Sea. There's the salmon, and then there's the oil.
On the Beryl Platform, you'll hear a vast number of accents: Scottish, English, West and East Coast, and the occasional Australian. As will be expected for an oil rig that comprises two hundred odd men and three women, football crops up in the conversation every now and then. That or the helicopter that never arrived because of gusts from the Atlantic.
*Reason One: Because It Feels Like Home: You will come to feel an unlikely thing that you feel that you belong here. None of the workers have actually anticipated this, but the cosy (read small) environment and the inescapable need to get to know your colleague means that you'll be spending holidays and anniversaries with them instead.
*Reason Two: And There Is So Much Socialising To Do: The general public tends to imagine a gritty life up an offshore platform, almost a mix between the archetypal Space Marine and the Wild West. The reality is that you will be working six months out of the year elsewhere living to your heart's content, and spend the rest of your back-breaking days of toil lounging about in the mess. While you should obviously brace yourself for the elements and the noise, rest assured that new safety regulations in place will shield you from the worst.
So you really ought to brace yourself for a lot of communal living and socialising with your colleagues instead. Unlike most civilian jobs, this isn't one you can simply walk out on, especially if the person you're picking a fight with happens to be living in the same two-man cabin as you are.
*Reason Three: And Assorted Entertainment To Go With It: You might be fighting over the telly channels though. Between cable TV, internet, free phone calls and cinemas, you had better been one of those people that really know how to enjoy himself after work. Staying in the office isn't really an option.
This is not to say that your workplace won't be always around you. As a matter of fact, everywhere you go and everything you see should remind you just exactly where you stand: as an indispensable unit in the whole shebang.
*Reason Four: So Long As You're Young: People are getting old on the platform. As a young and energetic newcomer, you will be working alongside experienced people who have done this for decades. Not a lot of kids from our generation takes to an alternative lifestyle too happily, compared to the anything-goes seventies.
So if you'll pull your weight and prove your mettle, nothing else really matters. Send in a resume if only for the fun of it - you never know what might happen.
