A more scientific look at acne will tell you that it is caused by the effects of hormones on the pilosebaceous unit. The pilosebaceous unit consists of hair follicles, sebaceous gland, and a hair. Tetracycline the most common antibotic prescribed for acne treatment. Your dermatologist would give you a starting dose of 500 mg twice per day until a significant decrease in acne is seen. Many people find it hard to stick with Tetracycline because it must be taken on an empty stomach in order to maximize the drug's effectiveness.

Erythromycin is another very common antibiotic for acne. Some say it is much better than tetracycline. Its anti-inflammatory properties help reduce redness in effected areas while killing bacteria. It is shown to be very effective at higher concentrations, but this must only be controlled by your dermatologist.

Doxycycline is usually prescribed to people who are non-responders to the other antibiotics. Unline over-the-counter topical remedies, Doxycycline stops the growth of bacteria all together. This antibiotic should be taken with food otherwise it could cause severe nausea.

Clindamycin is mainly a topical (lotion) antibiotic acne treatment but could also be perscribed as an oral antibiotic as well. Many studes have shown that the use of this antibiotic in conjunction with benzoyl peroxide is extremely effective in treating acne. This antibiotic acne treatment is available in a tube which is already mixed with benzoyl peroxide for extreme acne combat.
