All beaches in Hawaii are public access, meaning you can visit any beach regardless of where you stay while on the islands. There are golden brown, white and black sand beaches found in the tropical oasis. Typical Hawaiian beaches are well maintained, although the water is not considered "crystal clear" because sand is kicked up and the waves carry in coral bits and plankton and other ocean debris. Visit the beaches in the morning to experience a fragrant light breeze; go in the afternoon to experience choppy, small waves from trade winds.

The Big Island, Hawaii:

Honaunau Bay

Scuba divers from around the world visit Honaunau for it's underwater paradise, the Place of Refuge. The Kilueau volcano has erupted lava into the ocean over the year, which has hardened into smooth formation which has allowed an expansive reef of coral heads to grow. Both beginning divers and expert divers can find pleasure at Honaunau Bay, and the area is home to a large number of fish including the long-nosed butterfly fish and endangered green sea turtle. About 40% of the fish living in Honaunau are only found in Honaunau, allowing for a unique experience.

Kauna'oa Beach

If you're looking for a private beach of pristine sands, the crescent-shaped Kauna 'oa Beach is perfect for you. The water is a comfortable 78 degrees. You can stay in the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel adjacent to Kauna'oa Beach and enjoy the hotel's luxurious amenities as well as the private beach area. If you're not staying at the hotel, you can still enjoy this particular paradise, but keep in mind the hotel distributes 25 beach passes at a time so you'll need to get there before 9am or wait until later in the afternoon and evening when the day time beach goers are heading back for dinner. Kauna'oa Beach is located near an $18 million Gold Course, the Mauna Kea Golf Course.

Poipu Beach

If traveling to Hawaii with young children, the Poipu Beach offers some of the calmest waters of all Hawaiian beaches. There are protected bays and sandy bottom swimming areas which are never more than 3 feet deep. For older family members and experienced swimmers, just swim out past the kiddie-area to the reef area perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving adventures. There are a number of covered pavilions and picnic areas and public bathrooms and even shower facilities on sight. Keep your eyes and cameras peeled, and you may spot the endangered monk seal who happens to also love the serenity and calm waters of Poipu Beach.

Hanalei Bay

Enjoy the mountains in the distance on this 3 mile long stretch of beach. Hanalei Bay offers something for both experienced surfers looking for large waves as well as beginning beach goers or surfers. The right side of the bay has large waves while closer to the pier the waves have lost their energy. The middle sections of the beach waters are perfect for intermediate level surfers and boogie boarding. Despite it's wide range of wave sizes to please every beach goer, this beach is never crowded. If you visit Hawaii during the summer months, this beach is like a gentle lake perfect for swimming or paddle boarding.
