Best Dar Es Salaam Accommodation Great For Exploring From

On the edge of an Indian Ocean bay, Dar es Salaam is Tanzanias largest city and economically important to most of East Africa

. The Dar es Salaam harbour is the regions main port, the shops and office buildings are almost always abuzz; and there is excellent accommodation and restaurants at first-rate hotels such as the Southern Sun Dar es Salaam.

Its a busy harbour and the traffic includes everything from fishing boats and dhows to hydrofoil ferries and ocean-going liners. The waterfront is lined with historical buildings alongside more modern office blocks. You cant miss the fish market next to the ferry terminus and just across the water are Kigamboni and the lovely South Beach where tourists can join the locals for a swim and chill-out before heading back to their Dar es Salaam accommodation.

Worth a detour is the leafy Shabaan Robert Street with its peacocks, and on the corner of Shabaan Robert and Samora Avenue is the National Museum with its garden that is sometimes used for live entertainment as is the Nyerere Cultural Centre, the venue for music concerts and performing artists.

The western side of the Msasani Peninsula includes more shops, restaurants and pubs. Theres a weekend bazaar and its also where you can take a boat trip to the nearby Bongoyo Island. Alternatively you could visit Bagamoyo roughly an hour-long journey to the north worthwhile because of the beaches and the stories it has to tell.

If you can bear leaving your Dar es Salaam accommodation for a day or two, perhaps youd like to stay in the Mikumi National Park several hours drive from the city. Or maybe youd prefer a two-hour ferry-ride or 30-minute flight to the island of Zanzibar.

Dar es Salaam accommodation at its best includes some good restaurants. However when youre adventurous or just feel like a change, you can be sure of a good selection of very flavourful Indian, Chinese and Arab dishes to choose from in the older parts of the city.
