If we look at the history, then we can see that all the nutrients required for the canine animal were fulfilled from the wild prey. They contain all the required proteins and fats for the dogs. The ancestors of dogs survived on a meat based diet, not a grain or filler based diet. But still, we feed our dogs with such diets that are largely based upon fillers and grains. As these stuffs are cheaper, they have taken the place of high quality meats in most of the commercial dog foods.

Dogs don't get the required amount of nutrients from such grains as they offer very cheaper and fewer sources of calories than meat. Not only this much, but grains such as corn and wheat offer cheaper caloric energy as well as food allergies, gluten intolerance, obesity and type two diabetes.

The ancestors of dogs didn't used to eat grains other than those contained within the prey's stomach. Meat used to fulfill their all required diets and provide the building blocks for strong muscles and bones. Meats also provide great source of energy as it contains Omega fatty acids which help in maintaining a thick and a shiny coat.

Apart from all these things, a grain free pet food is also good for digestion purposes. As dogs are carnivores, their stomach cannot handle grains too well. A protein rich diet is highly preferred because it provides maximum nutrients and is highly digestible as well.

There are only few grain free products available in the market and only some of the best brands use high quality grains such as brown rice. However, dogs don't need any type of grains. If you want to feed your dog with grain free product, then I would recommend using Evo brand dog food which doesn't contain any grains or fillers and contain very less amount of carbohydrates.
