Best Retrievers for Duck and Goose Hunting
North American hunters rely on retrievers to assist in duck and goose hunting. Working dogs not only retrieve game but offer company and security for their masters. Two of the most popular retrievers for duck and goose hunting are the Labrador retriever and the Chesapeake Bay retriever. These breeds are large, heavy built dogs with waterproof coats that enable them to swim in frigid winter water.
The Labrador retriever is a solid, muscular dog with a short, thick, water-resistant coat of solid black, yellow, or chocolate. Labradors have a broad head, chestnut eyes, and thick muscular neck. Their heavy limbs and webbed feet make them excellent swimmers.
Labrador retrievers are loving, affectionate, intelligent, and loyal dogs. They enjoy spending time in the field hunting and exploring. Most labs begin retrieving instinctively as puppies. Labs are easily trained and are popular for hunting, dog competitions and other activities. In addition to waterfowl hunting, labs make excellent retrievers for upland game such as quail or pheasants.
The Chesapeake Bay retriever is another popular American hunting dog. Their powerful, muscular body and waterproof coat make them an excellent retriever for duck and goose hunting.
Their coat is short, dense and wavy, usually brown, red or tan. The head of the Chesapeake Bay retriever is broad and wide with an endearing appearance. The head and face of this breed is short haired and their vision is unobscured. The eyes are yellowish or amber in color.
Chesapeake Bay retrievers are usually friendly, intelligent and obedient. They are known to be very trainable for hunting. The breed also has a reputation for being affectionate and good with children.
Chesapeake Bay retrievers often join a household as a puppy, eventually becoming a companion and guardian of children while also working during the hunting season.
According to local legend, the Chesapeake Bay retriever breed originated when a shipwreck occurred off the coast of Maryland in the early 800's. The surviving dogs were bred with local hunting retrievers. The result was a line of dogs that are perfectly suited for hunting in the Chesapeake Bay region.
