When you are planning to come to Ladakh, you do not have too many options all round
the year.In Winters Ladakh remains cold, frozen and impossible to live in. It is the one place where you can get sun burnt and frost bite both at the same time.
Most of the trekking peaks that fall in the Inner Limit become absolutely inaccessible. Even the peaks falling outside the Inner Limit cannot be trekked or driven through. In Winters Ladakh is closed to tourists. The only trek that can be done is te Chadar trek, which ironically can only be done during winters, when the ice freezes and covers the Zanskar river under a sheet of ice.
Winter trek seems impossible as motorbikes wont be available on rent during this time. Hotels close down as most are run by people from outside Leh. There are permission issues as most of the places you wont be able to explore due to heavy rainfall.
The best time to come here during summers when the sun shines, the ice melts. The best time to visit Ladakh is during summers. Mid-May is the time when tourists start coming in to Ladakh. They continue coming until Mid-October when the winters begin to set and the place is closed down until next summers.
The months from June to September are best for conducting any kind of activity in Ladakh. The temperatures during this time goes up to 20 to 30 degrees. The nights become if not very warm but pleasantly cold.
Trekkers come here anytime between July and August. During the same time, the motor able passes on the Srinagar Leh highway and Manali-Leh highway become available for people. Many suggest winter as the unsuitable time for any kind of adventure activities. There is heavy snowfall and most for the routes become inaccessible.
