Remove unwanted programs- Are you one of those people that constantly download programs and install them onto your computer? Every software program you have on your computer is taking up space. It is not only taking up space, but it might also be checking for updates and connecting to the Internet. It also might be starting up when your computer starts up. There are so many good reasons why you should remove unwanted programs.
Disk CleanUp- Disk CleanUp comes free with Windows and will get rid of the rest of the junk files that you have missed. Go to start menu>accessories>system tools>disk cleanup. You can see more information about this system tool on my computer maintenance checklist.
Protect and remove viruses and spyware with a good protector- Free tools such as the PC safety scan from Windows Live OneCare, Microsoft Security Essentials, and the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool can help to keep your system free of the security-compromising and memory-hogging viruses and spyware.
Multitasking with large programs- If youre anything like me, you will have 20 Windows open at the same time, with your Internet browser having at least 15 tabs opened as well. Yes I know it is crazy and Im trying to reform. I have a lot of experience in multitasking and have realized that some programs cannot be open at the same time as others. For example you should not be running a large program like Photoshop or Pinnacle video studio, while running a virus scan at the same time. We all know what the right thing to do is, but we just cant help ourselves.
Programs require some physical RAM (hard disk space) when starting up and running. The more programs you have actively running, the more space required. If you dont have sufficient space for the programs to easily run, then your computer may become slow. Its a good rule of thumb to keep at least 10% of your hard drive free.
Use ReadyBoost (Windows Vista and 7 OS only)- ReadyBoost is a new feature to Vista and 7 that allows the user to use a USB flash drive to speed up your computers performance.
Reduce startup items- Programs that initiate during startup require RAM when loading. Combined this with the fact that the system is still loading, and you can have a very slow computer when starting. To minimize the wait time, reduce the number of programs that run at start up. Start > Run (or type Run into the Start menu search bar in Vista and 7) > type msconfig > Startup (tab) > [disable unwanted/unused programs] > [save settings] (Requires Admin Privileges)
