Other aquarium lighting systems that you can choose for your aquarium are metal halide, or T5 lighting systems. Both of these lighting systems create very high intensity lighting for your aquarium. The drawback to them is that both types also create a lot of heat, which lessens your ability to control the temperature of your aquarium. They also use more electricity than LED units. Metal halide and T5 lights both require maintenance, they have ballast that could need to be replaced, and you will also need to replace the bulbs on occasion. These types of lighting systems perform the best when used on saltwater aquariums. Another advantage of T5 lighting is that there are many different bulb colors to choose.

When choosing lighting for your aquarium you will have to consider the type of tank you want to operate and the type of fish that you want to have in the tank. Certain fish do better with different types of lighting. For most people that want to have a freshwater tank filled with common tropical fish, LED aquarium lighting is the best choice.
