Have you ever suffered from an eruption of red bumps on your skin, particularly on your back, upper arms, legs, thighs, etc., causing your skin to appear like Chicken Skin? You might have treated it for eczema, and found that it re-surfaced soon after you stopped the treatment? Do any of your other family members also have the same problem? If all this is true for you, then you are probably affected by a skin condition known commonly as Chicken skin, or medically as Keratosis Pilaris or KP.
KP occurs as a result of the inability of the skin to exfoliate naturally, resulting in the dead skin cells accumulating at the hair follicles, blocking them and causing the skin to appear inflamed because of dilation of the blood vessels underneath. It is a genetic condidtion and is very common especially in the cold countries, and affects more women than men, particularly after child-birth and during pregnancy. However, it is completely harmless, and treatable, both by applying creams and lotions available in the market, and home-made applications which work equally well, if not better.
Being very similar to eczema or acne, the treatment for these conditions is generally also given for KP. Some of the common names in the market are Retin-A, Adapalene-cum-benzoyl peroxide, and Arsitocort. The basis for the treatment is to provide the skin with an exfoliant, so that the excess dry skin cells (keratin) are removed before they aggregate at the follicles, thus preventing the roughening of the skin. Some sulfur preparations and soaps are also available.
Home remedies too are capable of providing the skin with a natural exfoliant, are more cost-effective, and have no side-effects. A very popular home remedy consists of a mixture of granulated sugar and curd or cream, which when very gently applied on the affected area, greatly helps in eliminating the affliction. This should be applied 15-20 minutes before a shower, and the skin should be patted dry thereafter. Any harsh rubbing would intensify the problem and cause bleeding, and should therefore be avoided. The affected area should thereafter be massaged gently with Vitamin E oil or coconut oil to soothe the surface. This treatment needs to be carried out regularly, else the condition re-appears after some time. Additionally, inclusion of fish and nuts in the diet would go a long way in preventing the condition. These are known to contain omega-3/6 fatty acids which are generally good for the skin, and in such conditions, provide the necessary nutrients for the skin to remain soft and supple.
