Beware Internet Scams When Setting Up Your Online Business

The trouble with many small business owners (and this is not meant as an insult) is they simply do not understand the technicalities of doing business online. Unfortunately, this leaves them wide open to being scammed out of a lot of money by unscrupulous Internet Marketing providers.

How do they do it?

Website Design Ripoff the company charges you (for example), 150 to create a simple 5 page website. They then use a free website template to create that design. Of course, because you are not familiar with the Internet and the fact that many website templates are available for free, you have no idea your website has been put together in 10 minutes simply by changing a few images and adding your own text/titles.

Domain Ripoff the company includes a free domain' as part of their overall package of web services. You think this is a huge benefit, until the time comes when you want to break away from the company providing your services. Only then do you realise you do not even own your own domain name and in order to keep it you have to pay the company whatever they wish to charge. Often they will charge you several hundred times the actual cost of registering the domain, which is in fact only about $10 each year.

Hosting Ripoff this is perhaps the biggest ripoff of all. The company includes hosting and charges you anywhere from $10 $50 monthly. However, your site is hosted as a sub domain' on their own hosting account, for which they are probably paying less than $50 yearly.

For example, the hosting service I use and recommend costs just $30 per year for an economy account. This account allows me to also host up to 5 subdomains for no further cost. If I was to include hosting for your business website and even just charge $30, I would still be making a tidy profit.

SEO Ripoff SEO stands for search engine optimisation' and is simply the means of helping your website appear higher in the search results when someone types in certain words or phrases, (keywords). Companies are charging literally thousands of pounds/dollars for this service, often on an ongoing monthly basis!

In actual fact, the basis of your SEO is built into your website when it is first put together. Unless you are targeting highly competitive keywords or looking to build your business worldwide, there is often no need for extensive SEO activities.

There is a growing trend within the online marketing community of targeting local, small business owners to offer online services. While there are many professional services on offer at reasonable prices, there are more and more being offered which are simply a way of scamming more money out of the small business owner's pocket.
