Beware Of Fake Iedge Ds Cards For Nintendo Ds, Nintendo Ds Lite And Nintendo Dsi

Fake iEDGE Cards
A bit of background to the iEDGE
For those a bit less familiar with the iEDGE DS card, it's the successor to the original EDGE DS card which was built for the Nintendo DS and DS Lite. The EDGE DS was more or less the most successful DS card of all time (but not the best selling: that honour goes to the legendary original R4v2 card). It was a DS card that got the basics right (reliability, sturdy construction) but managed to stay simple and not give in to the cheap "China gimmicks" that many of its competitors forced onto consumers worldwide.
The interface was simple and easy to use with no strange hidden functions. The packaging was sleek and sexy, coming in a triangular box not imitated by any competitors, making it ideal as a gift. It was likely a combination of these unique features that the EDGE DS never had any 'clones' or fake cards made of it - it was simply too far removed from other regular DS cards that used box packaging. Suppliers / factories could not be bothered to imitate it, opting instead to take advantage of the famous R4 brand name. Unfortunately, so many fake cards now exist for the R4 that all but the original R4 cards (now more or less limited to the R4 SDHC) are not really trusted anymore - the R4 / R4i Ultra, R4 "Advance", R4v3 etc. have all been touted as fakes, with the R4v3 being the most popular but still using sub-standard firmware.
So for all the reasons stated above, the EDGE DS was actually a resounding success despite being a latecomer to the market. When DSi cards were first introduced with the R4i card, the replacement EDGE DS was nowhere to be seen - until the start of 2010 when *finally*, the iEDGE DS came out! This is the true successor to the EDGE DS, following the rarely followed "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy that most Chinese manufacturers don't comprehend. The interface and packaging were excellent and unchanged from the original EDGE DS, and it proved to be an instant-hit - the market knew exactly what it was getting, and it turned out to be the most reliable DSi card yet.
The First Fake iEDGE
This time, however, things were slightly different. At least one factory realised how the iEDGE was gaining market share, and decided to make a copy of it to try and cash in on the phenomenon.
The fake iEDGE calls themselves the "EDGEi" - you can see how confusing this could get. The official websites for both cards give away whether they are real or fake.
The real website uses the original EDGE DS domain name, http://www.edge-ds.cn. Notice there is no "i" in the domain name.
The fake website uses the domain name http://www.edgei-ds.cn - this is the FAKE/CLONE website and cards bearing this website should be avoided if possible.
This is the easiest way to tell if a card you currently own, is real or fake - by trying the software from either website and then seeing which one allows your iEDGE card to work in your DS / DSi console.
How to Tell the Difference between the Real and Fake iEDGE
There is one more way to tell if the iEDGE DS you have is a fake or not. The fake iEDGE uses firmware that is basically a reprogrammed version of the DSTT's firmware, which means its error messages are the same.
If you see the above "Menu?" error when the correct software isn't installed, you can also be certain that your iEDGE is fake - the original iEDGE used more or less original programming and the error messages are different from those of the DSTT.
However, what do you do if you haven't yet bought an iEDGE card? This is the most difficult question of all, because on the outside the packaging is identical. The triangular shape and construction of the box is 100% the same, and it's basically impossible to tell the real from the fake until you take a look at the card inside to verify its official website or check the error message.
Danny Phantom / Sudoku Starting Icons
Another difference when using a fake iEDGE and real iEDGE is to check out the icon that shows when you start up your Nintendo DS or Nintendo DSi console. The REAL ICON is that of a real iEDGE and shows "Sudoku" after flashing. The FAKE ICON uses "Danny Phantom".
Buying a Real iEDGE Card
Because it's so difficult to tell the difference between the real and fake iEDGE, it's best to buy from a reputable store that only has genuine iEDGE cards for sale.
You can buy genuine, original iEDGE cards from NDS-Gear.
