A strong warning has been issued to warn drivers that fallen leaves can cause problems
on the roads leading to car crashes and thus car insurance claims.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) have warned that drivers need to keep up with basic maintenance of their vehicles in order to avoid road tragedies and accidents. During the Autumn months leaves can debris can build up in a car's plenum chambers which are located just below the windscreen under the bonnet.
Many drivers actually fail to recognise that debris has built up and will be quite surprised if they lift up their hood. You could well be keeping a small forest under there.
When debris builds up here, drains can become blocked causing water to leak into areas that should be protected - such as braking systems, computers that control the engines and other expensive electronic equipment.
If these important vehicle parts get damaged, it could potentially cause the kind of mechanical fault that could result in a traffic collision.
Drivers were also warned trapped water can make windows mist up, which impairs visibility and increases the likelihood of accidents - thereby jeopardising low cost motor insurance premiums.
In other news, IAM recently reminded motorists of the importance of checking tyre tread depth.
