Beware Of Tax Related Scams

All taxpayers should visit the page for Online Security on the ATO Website. It regularly publishes information on the latest scams identified by them. Any email claiming to be from the taxation office and asking for confirmation of your date of birth, tax file number (TFN), contact details, credit card details or any other personally identifiable information shall be treated as spam. We request that you should not provide this sensitive information to any third party. This comes under phishing and is a fraud in the eyes of the Australian law. These phishing messages may vary in form and content. You can get fraud phone calls, emails, sms, mails and online data. In some cases, even some people claiming to be from ATO may ask you personal information.

At this point, it is very important to notice that ATO never asks you to provide personal information. They will usually send you tax bulletins and emails informing you about the latest updates in the Australian taxation and due dates. ATO Tax Rates 2012-2013 Year

The adjusted basic tax scale for the Australian residents has been released. Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced the details of the new tax slab. These will affect all the people who are residing in Australia and are financially independent. We have summarised a list of various tax slabs which can affect your tax obligations:

Taxable Income Tax Payable

0 - $18,200 Nil

$18,201 - $37,00019c for each $1 over $18,200

$37,001 - $80,000 $3,572 plus 32.5c for each $1 over $37,000

$80,001 - $180,000 $17,547 plus 37c for each $1 over $80,000


$180,001 and over $54,547 plus 45c for each $1 over $180,000

These tax slabs are exclusive of the medical levy and low income tax offset. The tax rates for the medical levy may vary from the 1.5% to 2.5%. In case a person is not maintaining a proper private health insurance. However, the government is offering some exemption from this levy depending on the total income earned.

The low income tax offset can help in reducing your tax by 1.5 cents per dollar above the income of $37,000. The education tax refund is now renamed as school kids bonus, to be applicable from 1 January, 2013. It will affect the tax liability of parents who have kids attending school.
