Without a doubt, Niagara Falls is one of the most magical places in the world

. Theres something that brings awe to the spectator as the powerful water rushs over to pound the rocks below. During the summer months, hundreds of thousands of people flock to see them and experience what Niagara has to offer. As a result, hotels and attractions spend millions to advertise their venues in order to attract a small fraction of the tourists so they can get their piece of the pie. As you already know, advertising can be deceiving, and will always try to put on its best face. So, before you book that great deal lets look a little deeper. I always snicker when I drive by the large billboard sign near Fallsview Boulevard that displays an up close 20 foot Great White Shark in advertisement for the Rain Forest Cafes shark display in their gift shop. Does it work? Yes, people flock to the well known cafe, but not for its food, rather so the kids can see the shark display. Guess what? The sharks all died off, and I believe at the time of this writing there may be 2 left and they about the size of a large carp (maybe 2 feet tops). Hardly as exciting as one may have hoped, even if the kids still like it. Now, dont get me wrong. The Rain Forest Cafe on Clifton Hill is a fantastic place to eat, especially if youre bringing the kids. What I am saying is the avenue theyve chosen to direct traffic there is a little deceiving. As are many other attractions, accommodations, and restaurants, so be informed before you take the plunge. Another thing you should be aware of is independent owners. With the quick rise of tourism over the years many local business men purchased older inns, motels, and other buildings to convert into accommodations hoping to get into the action. Now while you can save a tremendous amount of money on these types of inns, there is a good chance you could find yourself in a crap shack. There are deals to be found, but beware there are owners who just dont care about their accommodations and figure penny pinchers will continue to roll in through the years anyway. A fallsview hotel does not necessarily mean a fallsview room. Despite the fallsview photos implanted in their bedroom photos, they sell out city view rooms with discount prices so be sure you are getting what you want. Dont be naive and try to see advertising for what it is. A sales pitch to get you to buy no matter what the cost. 5 Things to do to protect yourself: 1. Do your research Determine where you want to stay by what you want to see and do. Dont let price of accommodations determine that for you. Then get as much specific information about the accommodations, locations, amenities, attractions and services as you possibly can via internet, and phone. 2. Reviews - Check online reviews for your key area of interest. What are people saying about your choice, the pros and cons, the benefits and downsides? 3. Ask someone whos been there If you have friends or family that have gone to Niagara Falls, ask them where they stayed and the good, the bad and the ugly of their situation. Then follow up with more research. 4. YouTube People love to post their experiences up on YouTube. Check to see if your interests are posted and you can have a taste of what youll experience beforehand. 5. Google Images Most search engines offer an images directory, where you can search for images pertaining to your area of interest. Check to see if where youre staying is comparable to the advertising photos.
