Beyond Just Martial Arts Classes

On deciding to begin our Martial Arts Classes in Birmingham

, a lot of people are keen to improve their health by shedding weight and becoming fitter, a pretty reasonable goal. Martial Arts training goes beyond regular fitness classes by arming someone with the ability to defend themselves from attack; efficient self defence capability is another motivation people have for starting Martial Arts. Also, classes are percieved as fun and an ideal way to work off the stress of the day; the third major reason for people to actually take up Martial Arts training.

These reasons are the driving force behind people adopting Martial Arts training. Expectations and goals are one thing but do Martial Arts training deliver on these? Examining each starting motivation in turn, this post will attempt to provide an answer. Fitness should be a major element of all Martial Arts classes; punching and kicking are very strenuous activities and will burn calories, while grappling skills are tough too. As a result, training in the Martial Arts should provide you with a great workout, although there is some variation in the intensity of classes.

As a rule, a Martial Arts style with a competitive side will ensure you get fit, so you can compete effectively. An example, would be a Muay Thai class which will emphasise fitness to enable you to cope with the intensity in the ring. So even if you never actually compete you will train as if you were, you will get fit as a result. A traditional Karate class which emphasises forms, or Kata in Japanese, over sparring or competition may place less emphasis on fitness than a Muay Thai class. This is not always so as certain Karate classes will send their students to Kickboxing and MMA contests to test their skills, the distinction is not clear cut. As a general rule, however, combat sports place more emphasis on fitness than traditional non-sport Martial Arts.

As far as self-defence goes ALL Martial Arts will help to prepare you for a nasty encounter and some training is certainly better than no training! Despite this traditional Martial Arts are more interested in retaining originial skills and drills. This means that some aspects of training can be out of date.

The rules of competition in combat sports are in place to protect the fighter, which means the more deadly skills are removed for safety reasons. Self-defence classes include these banned techniques and so, in theory at least, are better at preparing you for the reality of an attack. This is not conclusive, however, and there is some debate on the internet and elsewhere over the best option for self-defence purposes. While any of these approaches to training will help you in an attack situation there are pro's and cons to each. Traditional styles contain some deadly techniques; combat sports get you very fit but the focus is sport, which detracts from the purely self-defence aspects of training, which are all the self-defence/protection systems train for.

Aside from debate, any Martial Arts class will blow away the stress of the day. Simply throwing punches and kicks or chucking a partner to the floor is a greater stress buster. In fact, I believe that every home should have a a heavy bag to let loose on. This would be a great way for families to get on better.

While there is some difference in emphasis across styles, taking up a Martial Arts class will deliver to some degree on the three main reasons people take them up. Your fitness levels will go beyond what you thought you were capable of, your capacity to defend yourself will amaze you and stress will be no more, so come on down!
