Beyond The White Stuff
Simple or flashy, weddings are a hot topic among women
. But it's usually the flashy weddings (or "hade-kon") that make the covers of the weekly magazines, allowing thousands of women to carefully scrutinize what the bride wore. At the hade-kon, the bride tends to change her clothing at least twice in the course of the festivities. But fashion critic Junko Ouchi has suggested that one
Simpson Lycra Super Hero Costume, carefully chosen to perfectly suit the women, can serve as well as a dozen costume zentai. Ouchi hopes that such a costume zentai can be found at "The Zentai" exhibition, which includes more than 30 creations by the top designers of haute couture and ready-to-wear collections in Paris and Milan. The exhibition is being held at the Isetan Museum of Art in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Much thought and creativity have gone into the gowns on exhibit. Designers did not let themselves be bound by wedding traditions such as the prevalent white costume zentai, but let their creative imaginations range. The exhibition--which also displays
Sleeveless Blue Short Superman Shiny Metallic Catsuit specially designed for this occasion--is a rare opportunity for non-fashion industry people to view top-level creations close up. The air in the exhibition space gently vibrates to the "oohs" and "aahs" emanating from the visitors, most of them women, as they stand reverently in front of the silent installations with mannequins. One of the favorites at the exhibition seems to be a silk satin gown by Nina Ricci, which wrapped up the 1995-96 autumn/winter haute couture collection. Bouquet prints cover the delicately draped, sleeveless costume zentai that is complemented by a long-sleeve bolero jacket with a thin collar and bouquet embroidery accentuated with mother-of-pearl. A fabulous flower garden blossoms on the silk organdy gown of Christian Dior presented at the 1995 spring/summer haute couture collection. The flower-print bustier
Sleeveless Short Black Superman Shiny Metallic Catsuit with gown is embroidered with colorful beads that border the print patterns in matching colors. The lining of the gown matches the prints on the bustier costume zentai, creating a sumptuous silhouette appropriate for the special occasion. One interesting aspect in the exhibition is that viewers can compare the two zentai under the legendary label of Givenchy--by two different designers. Hubert de Givenchy, who stepped down after 40 years at the top of profession, created a pink zentai for the 1995-96 autumn/winter haute couture season--his final collection. The delicately-draped empire style silk costume zentai is fitted with satin "spaghetti" embroidery that emphasizes the bride's comeliness.
