Bhai Dooj-celebration Of The Relationship Between A Sister And Brother

In a country like India, relationships are considered as top priority

. So there are several festivals and customs to celebrate those relationships and demonstrate the fact that relationships are important in life and they are beautiful. Each relationship represents a promise and festivals give them new heights making us realize their worth. Bhai Dooj is one such festival. This festival is specially meant for sisters and brothers particularly, to make them know how significant, sweet and strong the relations are. This festival represents the love, emotional attachment and promises of the relation between a brother and his sister.

The festival, Bhai Dooj is celebrated all over India. After celebrating Dewali for five long days this festival is usually commemorated on the last day of the Diwali festival. The sisters give tika on their brothers" forehead, does the aarti, and prays for their brothers" well-being.

The brothers give gifts to their sisters and promises to protect their sister always. There is another custom for women who do not have brothers and that is to worship the Moon as God.

Different states have different names for this festival. Somewhere it is called Bhai Tika, somewhere it is known as Bhatru Dwithiya, and Bhatri Dwitiya is the name in some other places.

All brothers and sisters look forward to this day. On this day men who live far from their homes due to work commitments or other reasons come back to be with their sisters and other family members. Sisters serves their brothers with a variety of delicious sweets, snacks etc. The lunch dishes are also specially prepared for the brothers. The whole day is celebrated in a joyous mood. This festival is actually the celebration of the sister - brother relationship.

There is a controversy regarding the origin of the festival of Bhatri Dwitiya. Some believe that when Lord Krishna came to his sister Subhadra after killing Nakasur-a devil, Subhadra gave him a warm welcome with tika, aarti and sweets and this is the beginning of Bhatri Dwitiya. Some people also believe that this festival is related to Yamraaj and his sister Yami who first started this ritual. It is interesting to know that when a sister gives tika on her brother"s forehead she usually chants a poem relating herself to Yami and she wishes her brother a long and prosperous life.

The festival comes amidst a festive season when there are a lot of other festivals too, like navratri, dashera, durga puja and diwali. This festival adds to the happiness of people.

During the time of Bhatri Dwitiya special gifts are sold in the market. Girls who have brothers generally fast until they put the tika on their brothers" forehead. They break this fast only after the entire ritual is over. People wear new clothes on this day and they celebrate Bhai Dooj with a lot of grandeur.
