Bharat Stage Iv Emission Norms Make Cars Expensive
The Bharat Stage IV emission norms are all set to be implemented in the country in
order to bring the emissions from automobiles close to that in the European countries. However, the new norms require changes in the engine and exhaust system of cars for which the government gave the carmakers one year. These mandatory alterations and other factors like rising raw material prices and 2 per cent increase in excise duty have compelled the carmakers to hike prices of their products. Here is an overview of which companies are going to increase the prices of their cars coming April.
TATA Motors: News has been doing the rounds that the Tata Nano peoples car is no longer going to be as cheap as it used to be. The exact price hike would be announced around April 1. According to the president, passenger cars for Tata Motors, Rajiv Dube, The hike will also factor in increasing raw material prices.
Hyundai Motors: The company had increased the price of its cars after the budget and now the new emission norms are making the company rise its prices again. Hyundai will increase the prices in the first week of April, said Hyundai Motor regional sales manager Kumar Priyesh. The Hyundai stable is abuzz with the launch of its brand new SUV Santa FE by October and the designing of a new small car with a 800cc engine.
Mahindra and Mahindra: The car maker is also planning to pass on the increased cost incurred due to the alterations to its customers. So, it is likely that you might have to pay a little more to get your hands on those brawny Mahindra models.
Fiat : The carmaker has recently launched a new version of
Fiat Grande Punto and the CEO and president of the company, Rajeev Kapoor, was heard saying, We have to upgrade the system of cars to make them more environment-friendly and this will add to the cost. According to Kapoor, The increase in 2 per cent excise duty proposed in the Union Budget was passed on to the consumers in the form of a nominal price hike. But the gradual increase in raw material prices is not being passed on. We are adjusting it within our operational efficiency.
It is possible that the other auto companies might soon announce a slight hike in price around the April 1 deadline. The BS IV norms teamed with other economic factors like fuel prices are likely to send the car sales southward. But we hope it is only for a short while.
