Bhopal Gas Tragedy: Who Will Help The Victim?

At a time when the country is still coming to terms with the light punishment that

those responsible for the worst ever industrial disaster in the world got away with, Congress is busy playing the blame game and its leaders trying to score points over each other. If the news reports and headlines in the last few days are any indication, it only goes on to show how insensitive the party leaders have become to a grave tragedy and are playing politics over it.

This is because the party has so far failed to fix accountability as to how Warren Anderson, the then CEO of Union Carbide, was given a safe passage out of the country. And the party became absolutely belligerent when former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhis name came up in this context. Till then, it was the then Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Arjun Singh, who was being a scapegoat.

At a time when the guilty got away with a mild punishment of just two years for the death of more than 15,000 and many are suffering from incurable diseases for life, Congress should perhaps look at two or rather three main issues. Firstly, how a more stringent punishment can be given to the guilty, secondly, explore possibilities of extraditing Warren Anderson so that he can stand trial and thirdly proper rehabilitation and compensation for the victims.

The Government should also look at a long-term policy to ensure that such incident are not repeated. They need to put in place a proper response mechanism and also make suitable amendments to the existing laws make new laws that plug loopholes allowing the accused to get away with light sentences.

But the party that is responsible for running this country is busy doing its own damage control and indulging in dirty politics. Can the leaders of the Congress be a bit more sensitive please.
