The National Central Library of Florence (BNCF) is located in a monumental building on the Lungarno Florence near the Piazza Cavalleggeri in the village of Santa Croce. It is one of the most important European libraries and the largest of the Italian libraries and, together with the Library of Rome, is the only one Central function conferred when Florence was capital of Italy.The library shelves currently cover 120 km, with an annual increase of 1 km and 475 meters. The Library possesses six million printed volumes, 2,689,672 pamphlets, 25,000 manuscripts, 4,000 incunabula, 29,000 sixteenth-century editions and over 1,000,000 autographs and has 599,970 books consulted in the year 2009. Originally the Library was established, as all public offices, on the whole of the Uffizi. In 1935 he was moved to its present site, built from 1911, designed by architect Cesare Bazzani, and subsequently enlarged by Vincenzo Mazzei. The construction of the complex, one of the rare examples of library construction, took the towns of energy throughout the first decades of the twentieth century, with the interruption of the First World War.The site chosen for the building was an area of 10,000 square meters, occupied, at the time, the barracks of the Cavalry.The first part to be completed (1929) was that of Dante and Galileo tribunes located in a corner and then a more monumental and functional, while the reading rooms were temporarily placed in the local library of the former convent of Santa Croce.
