Because such cars are often seen as uneconomical, sales are often hit when a spike in petrol prices is experienced. A similar phenomenon was seen in the motor trade in 2008, when fuel prices were at their previous highest levels. At that time, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reported that sales of second-hand 4x4s experienced a 20 per cent fall over the previous 12 months.

Large petrol-engined cars were also expected to be particularly badly affected, with price drops of up to 10 per cent predicted by car industry watchers. And although buyers of all new cars are facing the imminent introduction of the new showroom tax, those who plumped to buy ahead of its imposition were expected to face a further blow, as the depreciation on their vehicle was anticipated to accelerate in response to car buyers opting for more eco-friendly choices.

Of course, there are always beneficiaries of such cycles, and in this case, it was expected to be good news for anyone coming into the market and looking for a large MPV-class vehicle, such as an Audi, BMW or Range Rover 4x4 model, with savings amounting to several thousand pounds touted as being achievable.

That is, provided any potential buyers can find one. It was reported that some dealers had refused to take such models in part-exchange for fear of finding themselves stuck with a car which was proving difficult to sell on, and costing them more in depreciation the longer they remained unsold.

Political uncertainty in the UK also temporarily stalled the market for pre-owned cars, but with a new coalition government in place, that effect is likely to drop from the equation.

It is also possible that technological improvements which have been implemented over the past two years could help reduce the impact of general price falls among 4x4s and large executive class cars.

Such innovations as greater use of hybrid power technology, and stop-start capability where a cars engine is automatically switched off if it remains stationary for more than a few seconds are now being applied widely in the luxury cars sector, and these are being seen as having an effect in reducing the speed of decline.

But, as with any sector of the used car market which can be subject to the whims of buyers and traders, the advice must be to research extensively and take time to choose a used 4x4 or executive saloon. Equally though, the potential savings which can be made by following these tips can be huge.
