Most of us want a cozy, homey atmosphere. Here are a few secrets you can use to make your bigger space, cozy. When you consider paint, think darker colors. One of the reasons the darker, richer tones are more popular today is because they bring warmth to a space that feels a bit chilly.

Placing a light color in the room will make the light bounce off the walls and this will make it appear even larger. To make high ceilings look lower paint the dark color on the ceiling. Less light that is reflected will make the room feel cozy and smaller.

Also when you are trying to make a larger room feel smaller, don't place as much lighting in them. Also try purchasing larger furniture and plants which will make it seem cozier since you have the room. You won't have the clutter feel in a larger room with bulky furniture that you would with a smaller room with the same furniture.

Or try using that furniture that is oversized. A group setting will work to make the room appear a bit smaller too. Set off a separate area of the room for reading or talking, and the other area for something else.

Now that you have created little areas in the room you need to have a way to specify the areas and anchor them. Area rugs are the answer here. An area rug will not only add warmth and interest, it will pull the pieces of each grouping together. Place an area rug in each group and keep the pattern and tones cohesive, and your room will be instantly transformed into a large, yet cozy room.

Using more than one area rug in a large room takes some careful consideration. The rugs need to flow together and not seem like they are duking it out for your attention. Matching your area rugs to the furniture group and the purpose of the grouping shouldn't be too difficult. In a room that is 12x24 for instance, you could easily use one area rug that is 6 x 9 and one 9 x 12. Or, you could use two that are 8 x10.

Pick out a look that is close to the same color, pattern and even texture of each rug. The floor of the room will be perfect than. With two different sized rugs the room will look better than using two of the same size.

If the rugs look too similar you'll feel as if it's still a large room and not grouped into a few different sections. Don't' be scared to choose two different carpet styles when placing them in a large area. Try choosing a larger area rug for the biggest grouping in the room and then a smaller oval one for the other part. After all is put together you should feel as if the room did shrink in size and it should feel cozy.
