Bike Safety for Kids: Helmets are Not Enough

Most of us already know the importance of safety provision when letting your kids ride their bikes like wearing bike helmets and other protective gears. Sometimes, you worry when your kids are not wearing helmets, arm and knee pads because you feel as if they are not protected. Although true, sometimes even if your kids wear all the protection they need, they are still prone to accidents and injuries.

The most common bike-related injury among children is the head injury which affects more than 50% of kids who ride their bikes. The most specific head injury is the traumatic brain injury which comprises the other 10% cause of bike-related death. The other 90% bike-related accidents are caused by collision or crash with other motor vehicles. Collision or crash with other motor vehicles is the most common cause of death among children who are involved in bike accidents.

Boys are more prone to meet bike-related accidents who are 14 years old and below. The bike-related accidents usually happen on minor roads and during night time, or dawn. The most common reasons for kids to involve in bike-related accidents are riding their bikes fast without stopping, not following traffic signs, and running against the traffic.

It is important to teach your kids to how to ride a bike properly to avoid these kinds of accidents. It is also important to remind them that they should not ride their bikes on highways and main roads with fast cars passing. The possibility of getting hit by fast cars when riding a bike is high in main roads and highways because cars in these roads tend to drive faster than usual.

It is also important to teach your kids the right road rules to follow. You should remind them that bikes are not just toys to play without responsibility and caution. You must tell them that a bike is also a small vehicle which also requires a lot of responsibility when they use it. So remind them that before riding a bike, they have to be careful and responsible enough to ride safely without getting hurt or hurting other people.

It is better to prevent your kids from accidents and injuries by educating them properly and sensibly. Your kids should also see that their parents are doing what they preach. You should set examples for your kids so that they will be able to follow what you do as their role models.

The next time you believe that bike helmets are enough to keep your kids protected, you better think twice. Protective gears are useless if proper knowledge on riding a bike is not learned.
