Biking Encouraged by Awards Ceremony in Southern Florida

Sanibel Island's own Darla Letourneau was recently honored as "Citizen Bike Advocate of the Year" by the Florida Bicycle Association. The association holds an awards show every year. This year, the ceremony took place during the ProBike and ProWalk Florida Conference. Letourneau was chosen because of her encouraging efforts made on the behalf of bicyclists and pedestrians.

Letourneau was involved in researching, policy shaping and committee service. She was also the primary force behind the concept of BikeWalkLee. Every year the association rewards those who take an active role in local community and inspire and support people who are bicycling for the betterment of Floridians and beach residents. Ultimately, Letourneau and the FBA organization hope to encourage more bicycle activity, as a healthier and safer alternative to motor vehicles.

In fact, bicycling is very popular in the area. There are 22 miles of cycling paths on the island. There are few hills and thus sightseeing can be done while cycling. Some local residents will tell new visitors that cycling is one of the best ways to see the island. The majority of Sanibel Islandevents and Sanibel Island restaurantsare all located within two miles of the lodging facilities. Therefore, it's common for Sanibel Island hotelsto rent bicycles to tourists.

If you are biking in the area, then be sure to heed speed limits which are 35MPH or less. Motorists are advised to watch for pedestrians and cyclists in the day and at night, and to "double stop" (as signs are posted) at intersections. In addition to bicycles, residents or visitors can rent full-size bikes and scooters to travel at their own pace.

The Florida Bicycle Association certainly honored Sanibel Island, Floridawhen it honored one of Sanibel's own. Captiva Islandis also crazy about biking, and you will notice a lot of rental shops in the area, including the popular Finnimore's Cycle Shops. Bike riding in the Captiva, FL area is also a pleasurable and scenic experience that will appeal to families.

Bicycling is one of the major draws of Sanibel Island. It's not uncommon to see many of the city's regulars biking their way to work or school. Unlike other locations in Florida, this is not a typical "Spring Break" type of place. Family attractions like wildlife parks, seashells and beaches are the most popular draw of the city. This atmosphere certainly lends itself to biking, a healthier way to travel!
