Bill Meury's Days on the Riverside Red Wave
Bill Meury's Days on the Riverside Red Wave
As a professional baseball player, Bill Meury spent several years playing in the minor league. His experience as a baseball player eventually took him all over the western United States and his very first position was secured in 1990, when he was 22 years old, as a player for the Riverside Red Wave in the California League. After years of dreaming of making it big, Bill Meury finally had the chance to begin his professional baseball career when he signed with this, his first minor league team.
Bill Meury started his professional baseball career as a shortstop in Riverside, California. Home games were held at the Riverside Sports Center, and Bill Meury's participation in these events had a huge impact on those who went to see the games. A crowd favorite, Bill Meury had several loyal fans who still vividly remember how it felt to sit in the stands and watch their idol take the field.
Jim Mennle, from Riverside, California, is one of Bill Meury's greatest fans and was present at his first professional baseball game. "That first game," recalled Jim Mennle, "was magic. It was an evening game, so the sun was going down overhead as the teams ran onto the diamond and into the outfield. I was just a kid, but boy did I know my baseball. I was one if it's biggest fans! I looked at the roster before leaving home that day and was eager to see how the newcomer, Bill Meury, would fare. Shortstop is a really important position, and I was worried that the newbie wouldn't be able to handle such a pressured and important role. Boy, was I wrong! Bill Meury played like a champ, and I have been a loyal follower ever since. I still have his baseball card, in my collection."
Jim Mennle is not the only fan who was dazzled by Bill Meury's performance. John Walker, a baseball coach from one of the nearby high schools, was amazed by the fresh talent that the Riverside Red Wave had procured. "These boys were great," said John Walker. "I remember that game, the first game that Bill Meury played in. That was a great game, very close and full of action. I took my boys to go see it and almost missed one of the best plays while I was getting them hot dogs. I came running around the bleachers with the food just as the crowd erupted in cheers and Bill Meury made his first run. What a great memory, and what a great player!"
As a member of the team that was both smart and athletic, Bill Meury contributed great things to the world of professional baseball and inspired a large number of up and coming talent. His example has been cited by many of today's baseball greats and it is all owed to the recruiter who signed him to his first professional baseball gig, the recruiter for the Riverside Red Wave.
