She wasactive in her church and her block association, and shethought of herself as being well liked by a lot of people, but when in her depression she began to withdraw fromthe world, her telephone stopped ringing. None of her so-called friends even bothered to find out if she was all right, and that filled her with despair, thinking back on all thephone calls she had made to people in her community justto check up on them and say hello. The only person who kept calling was Margaret, a woman she had met in Weight Watchers. One day Mar garet called her and offered to drive her to a meeting that night. Elaine said sweetly, "I tried Weight Watchers withyou before, remember? It just didn't work for me."

"1 don't go there anymore," said Margaret. "I go to a

Elaine begged off. She was not in the mood to start anew diet.

Elaine started having difficulty getting up in themorning and was running out of excuses for being late atwork. She used up her sick days and then her vacationdays. Elaine burst into tears, hating herself for cryingin front of this woman who had gotten the promotion thatshould have been hers.

The department head said she would be allowed to continue in her present position if she saw the staff psychologist. At first Elaine was furious that she had toconfide in a total stranger in order to keep her job, butafter a few weeks she found herself more and more willingto open up and talk about her problems.
