Konkana Sen Sharma is a Bollywood actress of Bengali origin

. She is the daughter of actress and filmmaker Aparna Sen. She is one of the most revered actresses in the genre of contemporary parallel and independent cinema.

Early life

Konkana Sen Sharma was born on 3rd December 1979, to Aparna Sen, an actress and filmmaker and Mukul Sharma, a science writer and journalist. She has an elder sister Kamalini Chatterjee. Her stepfather is Kalyan Ray, an author. Her maternal grandfather Chidananda Dasgupta founded the Calcutta Film Society, along with Satyajit Ray and Harisadhan Dasgupta. He was a writer, scholar, professor and film critic. Her grandmother Supriya Dasgupta was the sister of legendary poet Jibanananda Das.

Konkana studied at the Modern High School for Girls and Calcutta International School. Later she studied at St. Stephen's College, Delhi and earned a degree in English in 2001.

Career

As an Actor

1983- 2005

The Beginning- As a child Konkana worked in Indira (1983). As an adult she made her debut with the Bengali film EK JE AACHHE KANYA (2001). Her next movie was TITLI, in 2002 alongside her mother Aparna Sen and Mithun Chakraborty. Rituparno Sengupta directed it.

In 2002, Konkana Sen Sharma acted in the critically acclaimed English language film MR. AND MRS. IYER, directed by her mother Aparna Sen. She mastered the Tamil language for her portrayal of Tamil housewife in the film. She won her first National Film Award for Best Actress for this film. This performance was also included under the "Top 80 Iconic Performances" in Filmfare's 2010 issue.

2005- present

In 2005, Konkana played the role of a Page 3 journalist in Madhur Bhandarkar's National Award winning film PAGE 3. With this role Konkana gained commercial success. In the same year she essayed the role of a schizophrenic in 15 PARK AVENUE. Her acting in this movie was critically acclaimed. In 2006, Konkana starred in Vishal Bharadwaj's OMKARA, alongside Saif Ali Khan, Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor. She won a Filmfare Award in the Best Supporting Actress Category as well as the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.

In 2007, Konkana Sen Sharma played the role of a prostitute in Madhur Bhandarkar's TRAFFIC. But the movie didn't do as well as expected. In Anurag Basu's LIFE IN A METRO (2007), Konkana starred opposite Irrfan Khan. The movie was a multi-starrer and it did well at the box office. Konkana won her second Filmfare Award in the category of Best Supporting Actress for this film. Konkana had two more releases in 2007, LAAGA CHUNRI MEIN DAAG and AAJA NACHLE, and she had supporting roles in both. Both the films were made under the Yash Raj banner. But failed to be successful at the box office. However, masses and critics appreciated Konkana's performance in AAJA NACHLE.

In 2008, Konkana did a movie called DIL KABADDI, which didn't do well at the box office. She also acted in a short film, 8 (2008), which was directed by Mira Nair and was screened at international film festivals.

Konkana's next release was THE PRESIDENT IS COMING (2009), directed by Kunaal Roy Kapoor. It was a small budget movie, and received good reviews. Konkana's performance was well appreciated. In Zoya Akhtar's LUCK BY CHANCE (2009), Konkana played the lead opposite Farhan Akhtar. The critics loved the movie and Konkana's portrayal of an independent and determined woman. Her next release was WAKE UP SID (2009), produced by Karan Johar and directed by debutant director Ayaan Mukerji. The movie was a hit, and so was her unusual pairing with Ranbir Kapoor. Konkana did brilliantly in her role of an ambitious young woman living alone in a big city like Mumbai.

In 2010, Konkana acted in ATITHI TUM KAB JAOGE, opposite Ajay Devgan and RIGHT YAA WRONG, movies, which didn't do well at the box office.

As a Director

In 2006, Konkana made her directorial debut with a short film NAAMKORON (Naming Ceremony). It was an 18-minute short film shown at the Kala Ghoda Film Festival in Mumbai. She acted in DOSAR (2006), directed by Rituparno Sengupta, for which she won the Best Actress award at Mahindra Indo- American Arts Council Film Festival.

As a TV Host

Konkana has hosted a show on National Geographic in 2007, called MY BRILLIANT BRAIN.

As a Theater Actor

For the first time ever, in 2009, Konkana acted onstage in a play called THE BLUE MUG.This play was staged nationwide and abroad in 2010. It also stars Ranvir Shorey, Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak and Sheeba Chadha.

Konkana's upcoming movies are Rituparno Ghosh's SUNGLASS, Aparna Sen's IT'S MRINALINI, Sabyasachi Mukherjee's directorial debut, Basu Chatterjee's next, and Aditya Chopra's next MUMBAI. She also has a special appearance in Vishal Bharadwaj's SAAT KHOON MAAF, slated for a January 2011 release.

Personal Life

Konkana has been in a relationship with Ranvir Shorey for more than two years. She married him in a private ceremony on 3rd, September 2010.
