Biomarker Research Helps Boost Case For Regular Exercise
Research involving the use of biomarkers in America has found that it is possible
that exercise can help to reduce the risk of a person developing breast cancer. According to research carried out as part of the Alberta Physical Activity and Breast Cancer Prevention (ALPHA) trial, between 8 per cent and 30 per cent of all cancers are potentially related to physical inactivity.
Dr Christine Friedenreich, who was involved in the trial and announced the results at the American Institute for Cancer Research 2011 Research Conference on Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Cancer, said the study showed that exercise really can help to control cancer, from prevention to survival.
A total of 320 women took part in the one-year ALPHA study. They were post-menopausal, between the ages of 50 and 74, and had no personal history of cancer. Although inactive, they were healthy, non-smokers, were not undergoing any hormone therapy and did not drink more than two alcoholic drinks per day. A total of 156 of the women exercised five days a week for 45 minutes at a time and did not change their diet. Researchers asked women in the control group not to change their diet or exercise pattern.
The researchers monitored biomarkers associated with the risk for breast cancer and found that those women who engaged in a moderate to vigorous exercise regime saw changes in their adiposity, insulin, and leptin levels consistent with lower risk for breast cancer. The findings also found that better adherence to the exercise regime translated into better biomarker results.
The findings would appear to add to the growing body of evidence that no medical professional would disagree with "" eating sensibly and exercising regularly can go a long way towards helping people to enjoy longer, healthier lives. Taking regular exercise is something that is strongly recommended by health authorities and professionals in countries all over the world. In the UK, the NHS says that exercising can help people to reduce their risk of developing major illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, strokes and cancer by up to 50 per cent. It can also help reduce the risk of premature death by up to 30 per cent.
Not only this, but exercising can have some incredible short term effects as well as long-term ones. Physical activity has been shown to boost people's self-esteem, ward off depression and reduce the risk of stress, dementia and Alzheimer's disease.
