There are little variations in facial features and the shape of the face in sequential face images. However, the case is not the same with eyes. People always blink and move pupils unconsciously. A smart biometric access control can notice eye movements in the sequential face images and conclude whether the given face is a real human face or mere photograph. The biometric access control can be designed to refuse admission, if the input face is a photograph.

* Feature-based method for live face detection: The proposed method increases the accuracy rate of live face detection in a biometric access control. The input image needs to have high resolution. The face is big and it is skin tone sensitive. It takes into account various features of the face using geometric face characteristics. Generally photographs are small and unclear. A face recognition access control system by means of feature-based method for live face detection is not able to match a photograph with the image in the database.

* Facial movements for live face detection: Live face recognition access control system may be based on detecting the head movements and face gestures. It considers eye movements, eyebrow movements, mouth and lip movements, head movements and other such factors. The input image which is not still, is a live face and not a picture! The biometric access control system does not need an expensive camera. It can work on a low-cost camera and guarantees higher security by denying easy admittance.

A biometric access control system is a hi-tech security tool. Its popularity is owing to the mechanized protection it offers in the premises. It may lose its essence if it is prone to easy hoax.
