Many times, medications are released onto the market before their manufacturing companies really know what could go wrong with them. This is potentially the case with a hormonal contraceptive known as Yaz and its other form, Yasmin. It is argued these birth controls were put on the market without long term research, putting some women who took them in grave risk. Many of these women experienced problems far beyond those that are normally experienced from hormonal birth control options.

What Happens to the Gallbladder?

One of the more serious side effects of this birth control is gallbladder disease. Because hormonal birth control increases the amount of cholesterol in the blood, nearly every hormonal contraceptive on the market carries with it some increased risk of gallbladder disease. Basically, the excess cholesterol combined with the fact that many types of birth control slow the gallbladder down can increase risk of gallbladder infection or serious gallstones.

For most women, though, this risk is small unless they are already at risk because of other factors. Women on Yaz, though, have experienced gallbladder disease at what seems a higher rate than other types of birth control. Many of the women whose lives have been changed because of gallbladder disease from this birth control had no previous risk factors for the disease.

Essentially, though, Yaz puts such strain on the gallbladder that any women, even those without other risk factors, can develop gallstones or gallbladder disease while on Yaz or Yasmin. For this reason, women around the country are trying to do something about the problems that Yaz has caused in their lives.

The Effects of Gallbladder Disease

Many people think to totally brush off gallbladder disease as no big deal. After all, you don't really need a gallbladder, technically. While this is true, it's also true that life after a gallbladder removal surgery is totally different. Many times, women who have their gallbladders removed have to follow very specific diets for the rest of their lives. Even when on these diets, they can experience undesirable symptoms such as constant diarrhea and indigestion.

What Women Are Doing

Because gallbladder disease caused by Yaz and Yasmin is so serious, many women are taking the manufacturers of these contraceptives to court for damages. These woman are bringing many individual lawsuits against the manufacturing companies to sue for medical expenses, time missed at work, and other personal damages that resulted from their use of these forms of birth control. These women are part of a multi-district litigation but not a class action lawsuit.

What this means is that each time a similar lawsuit against Yaz or Yasmin is filed, the preliminary parts of the proceedings go through a particular court. Then, the proceedings are moved back to the court where the case is first filed. However, since this isn't yet a class action lawsuit, women have control over their own individual lawsuits and are not part of a group represented by one or two individuals. With the right legal help, many women are looking at getting compensation for the problems they suffered because of Yaz and Yasmin.
