Black Piranha Living Requirements

This term does not refer to just one type of piranhas but covers a whole range. The normal specimen that will be referred to as a black piranha is Serrasalmus rhombeus. They are from the Amazon and are so rare that there is some doubt as to whether or not they actually exist. Many other species darken with age but there is actually a variation that is black.

It is best that this species is not mixed with any other fish if they are being kept in an aquarium. As they grow to be large each one should be allocated an area large enough to hold 100 gallons of water. The water will have to be filtered on a regular basis as the fish are large and produce a lot of waste matter that needs to be removed to keep the fish healthy.

All piranhas have a reputation for being dangerous and this is shown on films. They are able to pull meat easily from a carcass and it has been said that a shoal can completely devour a cow. There will have been special circumstances surrounding this as most species are no more dangerous than any other family pet. This however does not apply to this breed of piranha. They are very aggressive to other members of their own species and are not all suitable to be in a tank with other piranhas. Even though they are with others in the wild, when they are in a tank, the black piranha is liable to turn on one another.

Their diet should be mixed and this must include live animals usually mice - feeder sticks and insects. With a varied diet they should thrive as they will be eating the same sort of food that they would in their natural habitat. It is because they are used to eating as and when they want in the wild that they are likely to turn on anything else in the tank if food has not been given to them. It is best to remove old food quickly before it decomposes as this will make them ill if they eat it and if nothing fresh is available they will eat it.

It is hard to breed black piranha in a tank, as they are not sociable and will more likely attack another fish rather than mate with it. It will be necessary to recreate their natural surroundings as much as possible and this will mean vegetation front the area that they were from. Sand needs to be in the bottom of the tank and it is in this sand that the eggs will be laid. Both parents will make sure that the eggs are well protected and they should hatch within a couple of days. When deciding to breed them, it is clearly important that you can identify which are the males and which are the females. An easy way is to examine the anal gland as the male is extended at the front while the females is straight.
