Haven't you heard? BlackBerry Bold 9780 and BlackBerry Torch 9800 are here and they're HOT!! RIM has unleashed it's most advanced BlackBerry 6 OS along with the two top dogs and it's about time we take a closer look at the new smartphones.

BlackBerry Bold 9780 vs BlackBerry Torch 9800

Size & weight

BlackBerry Bold 9780 is 114 x 66 x 15 mm, and weighs at 136g. Whereas, the BlackBerry Torch 9800 is 111 x 62 x 14.6 mm (111 x 148 x 14.6 mm when open) and weighs 161g. The BB Bold 9780 is lighter due to the fact that it doesn't need the extra flip out keyboard the Torch does.

Camera and video

Both BB Bold comes with a 5MP camera, 2x digital zoom, geotagging, VGA (640 x 480) video recording and flash. If you are expecting HD video recording capability or high-res photos from your mobile, then BlackBerry is not the choice for you.

BlackBerry torch 9800

Data input & navigation

BlackBerry Bold comes with familiar onboard full QWERTY keyboard while Torch has a slide out QWERTY keyboard as well as onscreen SureType QWERTY keyboard. The onscreen keyboard of Torch supports potrait / landscape mode and multi tap gestures.

In terms of navigation, both BB Bold and Torch has an optical track pad each. In addition to that, Torch also provides touch screen.

BB Torch 9800

Display

Both the BlackBerry Torch 9800 and the BlackBerry Bold 9780 have 480 x 360 pixel resolution screens. Though both come with the same screen resolutions, the Torch has the extra screen size with a full 3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen. Here we must understand that the same pixel density on a bigger screen simply means that the Torch may suffer from graininess. Which means we could see rough edges on typefaces in emails. For a phone who's main selling point is the emails, it is not a great news.

Battery life

The Torch's battery gives up to 5.5 hours of talktime, 18 days of standby and 30 hours of music playback. Whereas, the Bold's battery provides up to 6 hours of talktime, 22 days on standby and 36 hours of music playback. This is a great news and way better than other smartphones in the market.

Operating system

Both BlackBerries comes with the latest and most advanced BlackBerry 6 OS. The OS has been finely polished over decades for efficient messaging. Started with only e-mail functionality, RIM has over time, spread to social networking, instant messaging, multimedia sharing, and usual stuffs like, like texting and calling.
