Blackberry Curve 8520: Built for Speed

Blackberry's Curve 8520 was one of the early adopters of the sleek optical track pad when it rolled out a couple of years ago, replacing the iconic Blackberry trackball. As a result the handset became one sleek looking machine. It feels smooth all the way around and is nice in the hand with the cold metal back plate replaced with a warmer feeling plastic one, and a shape and size that is comfortable in the hand.

But the design isn't where the Curve excels most.

That would be the typing, and more precisely, the messaging. The QWERTY keypad is another Blackberry icon, but this iteration will hopefully continue to be the flagship feature of the manufacturer's handsets moving forward. And why wouldn't it be? It is easy to use, comfortable on the finger tips, and super responsive.

The 8520 combines the efficiency of the QWERTY keypad with the quickness of a 512 MHz processor, which means that there is no annoying lag between when you hit a button and when it appears on the screen. This phone not only looks great but is also built for speed. Think of it as the Concord of mobile typing without all of the technical problems. There are dedicated media keys to get you going social in a fraction of a second, and push email capabilities immediately alert you whenever someone sends a note. All of this gives quick access to functions that allow you to make use of that great backlit keypad in a flash.

If music is more your thing, the pay as you go mobile phone has an MP3 and ACC player built in with easy access from anywhere on the phone. And 256MB of built in RAM allows you to store just about anything you need, unless you are a person who desires to keep all 100 hours of Dave Matthews at Red Rocks on your handset, in which case you can get up to 16GB of external memory on a microSD card. It can also take high quality pictures on a 2.0 megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom, which looks phenomenal on that 2.46 inch screen full of vibrant colours.

Another great little feature that is worth note is the UMA capabilities. If you are one of the many frustrated mobile users who have had trouble getting a signal within the confines of your own home then UMA is for you. It uses your wireless broadband to work as a giant antenna and boost the signal of the 8520. It works incredibly well and will never leave you cursing over continuously dropped calls from the living room. Defiantly a must have feature.

The Blackberry Curve 8520 is a great entry level mobile for someone who is looking to take the smartphone plunge but doesn't want to dive in head first. It is incredibly cost friendly on a pay monthly plan and leaves you feeling satisfied with the array of features offered. The 8520 will have even the most amateur texter breaking world records in no time.
