Blackberry Pearl 3G – Is there a point?

Blackberry Pearl 3G Is there a point?

Blackberry Pearl 3G Is there a point?

Blackberry it's a word that polarises opinion like no other. The business world loves these gadgets yet the average mobile user is perplexed by their popularity, especially when it comes to the Pearl 3G. What is it that has had so many people in uproar about this handset? Let's have a look.

The good bits

It's a Blackberry, and therefore it comes with all the attributes of that brand bar one, which we will come to later. It is a neat, stylish handset that offers great looks and is well packaged, is great to hold, feels like a high quality model and comes with everything you would want from a modern day smartphone.

Let's have a look at the screen: 2.2inches, plenty of clarity, not a touch screen Blackberry doesn't offer one on many handsets but perfectly good, and is more than adequate in its class. We wonder, though, whether Blackberry should head into the modern world and start using more up to the minute touch responsive screens.

Connectivity: this is a 3G Blackberry not all are and has very good capability when it comes to connectivity. The web browser is pretty good not something that can be said of all Blackberry's and the incorporation of EDGE and GPS is excellent, while the email system is, as it should be, nothing short of excellent. All pretty good there, then, and nothing untoward.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are here, there is a decent music player with 3.5mm jack, the 3.2mp camera has autofocus, video recording and is perfectly good for this class of phone, and the personal organiser system, messaging, memory and such are all pretty decent. What is impressive as it is with most Blackberry models is the 13 hour standby, and the five hour talk time is not bad either when all is taken into consideration.

Overall, then, we have a decent mid-priced smart phone from Blackberry that should be popular with users, and the customer response to this handset has, in fact, been very favourable indeed with many ranking nigh on perfect.

So what's the problem?

Well, to start with, it's a Blackberry. Some people do not like Blackberry's the way others do not like tripe, beetroot or corned beef. A Blackberry is a matter of personal choice, and this one being a Blackberry with a difference is another thing altogether. The difference comes in the form of the keyboard: Blackberry has forged a reputation a worthy and just one for excellent business use thanks to beautifully incorporated full keyboards the Pearl 3G has an alpha numeric keyboard, and therefore loses that instant advantage.

Or does it? On first viewing it is easy to ask what is the point of a Blackberry with that keyboard?', yet the manner in which users have flocked to tell the world just how good, easy to use, versatile and satisfying this handset is makes us think we may be missing something. It's a good phone, one that pitches right into a very hard fought sector of the market, but whether it's good enough to beat of all-comers is another thing.
