Bleeding during early pregnancy
Bleeding in early months of pregnancy is a very common problem which a lot of women suffer from and complain about. It may become an issue of great concern in some cases and thus requires immediate attention and treatment.
Any sort of bleeding from the vagina three months of pregnancy is known as a during the first trimester bleeding. It may occur as light spotting or may be severe in nature with clots. There are several factors which may become a cause of bleeding in early pregnancy. Around 20-30% of the total pregnancies are affected by this problem. Another disappointing fact is that up to 50% of those women who complain of bleeding may go on to have a miscarriage (lose the baby). There are mainly three important causes of bleeding during early months namely abortion, ectopic pregnancy and hydatidiform mole. An ectopic pregnancy is when the fetus is not inside the uterus. In such kind of a situation pregnancy can be life threatening for the mother. It occurs when the fertilized egg implants in the fallopian tube.
The pregnant mother can suffer from small amount of bleeding associated with the normal implantation of the embryo into the uterine wall. This is known as implantation bleeding. It is usually very minimal but occurs frequently during the early days. It is a part of the normal body process and is not a reason for concern.
There are cases of threatened miscarriage when bleeding and cramping is reported by pregnant women. Infection in the urinary tract, dehydration, intake of some kind of medication or drugs, physical trauma may be some of the reasons which can lead to such a situation. In certain cases if the developing fetus is abnormal in some way even then bleeding takes place. There are times when without any apparent reason threatened miscarriage situation arises.
Based on the ultrasound evaluation if bleeding and cramping have slowed down and uterus appears to be empty it may be a case of complete miscarriage or loss of pregnancy. In certain situations incomplete miscarriage or miscarriage in progress also occurs when according to the pelvic exam the cervix is open and blood, clots or issues are still being passed. It means the miscarriage is not completed.
The pregnant woman may have a blighted ovum also known as embryonic failure when the embryo fails to develop as it should at the proper location even when ultrasound results show evidence of an intrauterine pregnancy.
IUFD or intrauterine fetal demise (embryonic demise) is when the developing baby dies inside the uterus. It may occur due to any reasons similar to those related to threatened miscarriage.
There may be other causes which may cause bleeding but are not directly related to pregnancy. For example, traumas or tears to the vaginal wall may bleed; some infections also become a cause of bleeding at times.
Any kind of bleeding be it minimal or major requires immediate attention so that adverse situations can be avoided as far as possible.
