Blepharoplasty Basics: Information You Should Know Before Having Eyelid Surgery
No matter how we try to avoid it, our body begins to show changes as we age
. Some people try everything they can to hold onto a more youthful appearance. This can be accomplished by using anti-aging creams or getting injections in certain problem spots.
One of the common areas that show signs of aging is around the eyes. As we age, our eyelids stretch and the muscles supporting them weaken. This can cause excess fat to build up above and below the eyelids, which is the culprit for drooping upper eyelid skin and lower eyelid bags. Not only does it make a person look older, it can also cause vision impairment.
During a blepharoplasty (cosmetic eyelid surgery), the cosmetic surgeon removes excess skin, fat, and muscle, which will not only relieve vision issues, but also rejuvenate the eyes.
Before considering having a blepharoplasty it is important to be aware of the risks. Every time you have a surgery there is the slim chance that a problem may occur, but the patient should know ahead of time. There are common issues that may arise after this type of surgery, which can include dryness and irritation in the eyes, impaired eyelid function, temporary numbness of the eyelids, and scarring.
Surgery is understandably quite scary for many people. One reason is because people fear the time it will take for them to recover afterwards. Stitches are often removed a week following blepharoplasty surgery. There is bruising and swelling that will continue to lessen after the stitches are removed. Sunglasses usually have to be worn a few weeks following surgery. For people who wonder how long they need to take off from their job, often after 10 days they can begin normal non-strenuous activities. Heavy lifting, bending, and exercise can begin after three weeks of healing. Some people choose to wait to go back to work until their bruising and swelling has cleared.
It is important to do research and gain knowledge on every aspect of the blepharoplasty procedure. If you feel it is the best option for you, finding a reliable and skilled surgeon will help you reach your desired look.
