Blogging Guide - Changes You MUST Make to Your Wordpress Blog When You First Set it Up

When you set up your Wordpress blog for the first time

, it always helps to have it set up in the right way so you can get the most benefit from it as part of your online marketing strategy. Here are some simple tweaks that you need to make to your blog before you do anything else. This will save you time by just showing you the changes you need to make so you don't have to go through all the options yourself. We'll work from the options from the top left hand side to the bottom in the Wordpress admin area.Click on "links" in the links section. Here you will see a bunch of useless links, you can delete all of these. Then go to the "settings" section. This is where most of the changes need to be made.Click on "general settings". Make sure you have correct info for your tag info (just the description of your site, try to include keywords here) and your correct email address for notifications. The rest of the information required here is self explanatory.Under "writing settings" make the default post category whatever you feel is most common post category for your blog. This category cannot be deleted. When you first set up your blog, you will usually see the untitled category as the default post category. If you want to delete it, just change the default post category to another and you will be able to.The rest of the settings you don' really need to worry about in this section. FYI in the update services, you'll see http://rpc.pingomatic.com ...this is just the service that tells the various search engines about your blog and it's latest changes. Under "reading settings" you can allow your blog to show your most recent posts or a static page for example an About page if your prefer. The rest of the settings here are self explanatory.Under "discussion settings" the default options are ok but you can change these to your own preferences if you need to.Under "privacy settings" make sure the option "I would like my site to be visible to everyone, including search engines (like Google, Bing, Technorati) and archivers" this is VERY important. You want your blog to appear in the search engine results.Under "permalinks" (and this again, is a very important change), check custom structure and enter /%postname%/. This means that the urls of your post will show the actual title of your post rather than just some random generated number. The old setting doesn't give you any of the benefits you need for your posts to show up right in the search engines.Summing up I hope you found this article useful. With all the settings in Wordpress it helps to make the right changes early on so you don't do a load of the work on your blog to find that the search engines haven't picked it up or have indexed the posts in the wrong way.
