Firstly something about me. I've been blogging since 2000, and have many blogs. If you want to make money online, a blog is a great way to start, because you can earn as you learn. Here's how to get started.

1. When you're deciding what you'll blog about, pick an area in which there's commercial interest. Are people buying and selling in that industry or area? If no one's selling anything, then steer clear.

Visit the topic blogs in your chosen industry. Work out how they are making money. They may be selling affiliate products on commission, or selling advertising. Perhaps they have paying subscribers.

2. Once you've chosen your blog's topic, it's time to see what other similar blogs are selling. Look at the products carefully. Are they selling their own products? Are they selling affiliate products? The more activity, the better, because if they're getting traffic and are making sales, you can do the same.

Often, new bloggers want to find topic areas in which there's no competition. This is impossible. Any area which is commercial has already been colonized by other bloggers. This is fine. Audiences grow too.

3. Here's an easy recipe for a successful money-making blog: fresh content and targeted promotions equal traffic and sales. Fresh content is important, because people read blogs to get news and information in an area in which they're interested. Targeted promotions are also important. Completely untargeted traffic, such as social media marketing, is useless.

4. Finally, remember that traffic which "converts" is vital. Your aim is always to attract visitors to your blog who will buy, or join your mailing list, or who will respond in some way.

Get started creating your blog money machine. You'll earn as you learn. Keep these tips in mind: choose a niche with spenders, choose what you'll sell, create content and promote, and pay attention to the quality of your traffic.
